Laptop camera vs external webcam: what the measurements say

Ask the internet whether you need an external webcam and you'll get opinions. Ask actual measurements — real resolution and frame rate captured from thousands of cameras in real rooms — and you get a clearer, more useful answer: most built-in laptop cameras underperform even cheap external ones, but not always by enough to matter for your use case. Why laptop cameras start with a handicap
